I think you are making a great point here. Drastic measures by game companies only drive gold farming companies (and that's what they are at that point - companies, not criminals) into much less desired ways of operating and downright criminal actions.
It's like hunting down a rat - it flees until its cornered and when it has nowhere else to run, it fights. And at that point it uses any means possible to defend itself and attack the hunter with everything it has. However, stopping to hunt gold farmers now won't make things go back to normal. The industry is already at a point where it got used to new methods of operating. Game companies have to start treating accounts, items and currency as objects of actual value and employ security measures accordingly. Whether they like it or not. The alternative is of course what you mentioned already - a free to play model.
You have no idea how humorous I find it that your post, outlining some of the problems with gold farmers, etc is being supported by advertisting from gold farmers:
http://www.buy-wowgold.com/?ref=23 You might want to limit who you get advertising from, or maybe you just don't care.
I tend to find it humorous.
Unlike my typical readers, I suspect that the gold farmer customers might click on ads and help support the hosting of this site I'd certainly welcome online games companies or others who would sponsor discussions of game security without gold farming ads. I have been approached about hosting gold farming ads explicitly... offers I have declined.
Since that's an affiliate link, chances are it would only support gold-farmers if PlayNoEvil readers actually went ahead and bought something from them. If that were the case, it would be a rather hypocritical audience, wouldn't it
I'll chime in here. How much do companies get charged for their high fraud rates? They are already paying 2 to 3% for accepting credit cards. What are they getting hit with? An additional few percent or 10 percent? If they are getting hit hard then maybe the game cards are the way to go. Our store at http://www.shatteredcrystal.com has a fraud rate that is 0.03% where we take losses. No that's not a typo.
The attempted fraud is around 10%. But we catch them every time. Since all we sell at the site is game codes. I would love to see the market go that way. But what I don't understand is. If we can get our fraud rate so low and we are selling to the same customers (honest, dishonest, Gold Farmers and non farmers) why do the game companies have these fraud issues? I see them as pretty easy to resolve.
I guess they do the math as well and come to the conclusion that it would cost them more to detect fraud than to simply eat up the costs.
At a tune of two million dollars in fines per year you can probably hire a few people who are able to take of that matter for you if you really consider it a problem. However, since they didn't really comment on the efforts they are taking to battle it, it's hard to comment how serious the problem is for them. Then again game companies (and the people who work there) are probably not of the type that are experienced in dealing with criminals. They'll notice that at some point and bring in a different kind of people (credit card and e-commerce fraud specialists...). |
